Changing Keyboard Shortcuts in OS X

Introduction <top>

Actually a quite useful feature though not that often used. But, if an application has some keyboard shortcut that conflict with Apple Mac OS X's own keyboard shortcuts, or some other application's shortcuts, this feature is absolutely indispensible.

1Password Example <top>

1Password's shortcut for Find Item conflicts with Mac OS X's Spotlight. Below is a complete example on how to fix. Note it all include a bit of testing - and mistakes made.

  1. Open System Preferences:

  2. Click on Keyboard & Mouse preference panel (in Hardware, see above).
  3. Select Keyboard Shortcuts tab

(end of list shows Application Keyboard Shortcuts:)
  4. Press + sign to add new shortcut:

And you will get a pop up dialog:

  5. Select application - 1Password.app in our example:

  6. Ok, here we technically speaking are missing a few exact screen shots but it should all be quite clear what to do...
  7. How it looks like after added a shortcut for the 'Find...' menu (in 1Password application):

The above was done according to instruction at support.agilewebsolutions.com/showthread.php?t=13351 but didn't recognize this was all about the Find... menu item, not the Find Item. So:
  8. Modifications to modify both Find Item and Find...:

How it now looks like from within 1Password:

  9. BUT, this still actually doesn't correct the conflict with Spotlight. Must modify keyboard sequence for Find... from Cmd+Opt+F to something else - chooses Cmd+Shift+F:

  10. NOW, we can turn back on (had disabled it earlier in evaluating 1Password) Spotlights keyboard:
    As I had it (disabled):

As it's per default, and can have it again after adjusting keyboard shortcuts for 1Password:
  11. Done.
