Slamming Spam: A Guide for System Administrators (not dated but seems to be quite extensive, slammingspam.atw.hu)

### General guide for configuring email client, stumbled up 2009-07-09

Microsoft Entourage for Macintosh OS X (www1.umn.edu) (local copy)

Type Pros (+), Cons (-) Examples
Desktop-based

+ No need to have access to server (may not be possible)

– Still have to fetch emails from server before processing

–

Server-based

Features Descriptions

POP Proxy Functionality

Extended Syntax

Very convenient for configuring email clients if the proxy solution supports.

Only have to reconfigure email client and NOT also the proxy.

Product Syntax Separator

Example

POPFile POP3remoteHost:POP3remotePort:User : (configurable)

mail.sarkinen.com:110:fwdscotchnmore.com

Spamfire User%POP3remoteHost % (fixed?) sarkijs%mail.sarkinen.com

Note: Spamato doesn't seem to support extended syntax (config must be done on both proxy app and client)

Personal ranking (JS, July 2009):

  1. POPFile (top choice)
    • + Easy to configure proxies - client only, no need for matching config in proxy application
    • + Runs in background
  2. Spamato - NO
  3. At the bottom:
      • - Have to restart computer to install (NOT done yet, not checked how easy to use)
      • - Costs, and could be higher than other reviewed; uncertain on details on that their '1 Seat' exactly means...

Spamato

Fg/Bg:

Foreground application. Must always run!

  Pros (+)

Cons (-)

- Problem with Entourage getting list of messages never stop!

- Foreground app that always must be visible

- Seems like have to configure each proxy individually via web interface, and then modify email client accordingly to what Port to use

Config: localhost:8574 (when app is running)
Pros

1. config via web

2. config email clients

Note: Spamato doesn't seem to support proxy extended syntax.
